COURT QUALIFIED ALARM EXPERT AND CERTIFIED FRAUD EXAMINER GETS SCIENTIFIC RESULTS
Reported Claim: In a claim of lightning damage to the
burglar alarm system at a very large residence, the alarm company
advised the insurance carrier that, not only the security equipment, but
all of the protective wiring in the home, would have to be replaced to
comply with new electrical code requirements.
Actual Findings: Our expert analysis determined that the system
wiring was pre-wired into the structure and was fully functional. With
no need for replacement wiring, the claim was reduced from $15,000 to
$2,500. To substantiate our position, we reviewed the code and confirmed
our findings with the local electrical inspector.
Reported Claim: A claim was made for lightning damage to a residential burglar alarm system.
Actual Findings: The homeowner had never used the alarm and it was determined that the installed system was never functional.
Reported Claim: An estimate of $3,200.00 was
presented to the insurance company for lightning damaged alarm equipment
protecting the entire home.
Actual Findings: The original burglar alarm system
never protected the entire home, only a small portion of the premises.
Therefore, the claim was reduced by 60%.
Reported Claim: A high-technology master control panel was claimed to be damaged by lightning.
Actual Findings: Our investigation revealed that the
components requiring replacement (according to the estimate) were
wireless components and could not have been affected by lightning. In
fact, the alarm company was unfamiliar with the equipment, not knowing
either how to program or use it. Therefore, they determined that it
would be easier for them to have the homeowner file an insurance claim
so that new, familiar equipment could be installed. There was nothing
wrong with the system at all.
Reported Claim: Lightning damage was reported to burglar alarm equipment in a high-risk commercial business location.
Actual Findings: Only a fuse had blown and needed to be replaced.
Reported Claim: A fire alarm system, including smoke detectors, was claimed to be hit by lightning at an insured’s premises.
Actual Findings: We found no evidence that a fire alarm system had ever been installed.
Reported Claim: Parts and labor for a master
control panel, keypad, and transformer are billed to the insurance
company for an actual lightning damage hit.
Actual Findings: While this equipment was actually
hit by lightning, the manufacturer includes the keypad and transformer
with the control panel, as part of the package. After this
determination, the price for these parts and labor were significantly
reduced.
